It is becoming more evident that many children are lacking the opportunity to be fit and healthy. Schools offer some activity as part of their compulsory curriculum; however, it does not cover the government activity guidelines for children needing to accumulate 60 minutes of moderate activity on a daily basis.
YMCA Kids’ Fitness Street Dance course is ideal for anyone interested in running health-related exercise sessions for children, those already running sessions but without a formal qualification and current fitness instructors wanting to deliver fitness and activity sessions to children. If we want to tackle the growing problem of obesity amongst children we need to find activities kids’ will really enjoy. We have developed two distinct approaches that will allow instructors to appeal to different groups of children: street dance, and play and games.
Street dance is a style of dance which has many influences, including hip hop and break dancing. It is popular with boys and girls of all ages and abilities. Groups such as Diversity and Boy Blue have showcased the advanced end of the scale; local street dance classes are a fantastic introduction. Working as a group builds confidence and creativity in children as they develop new moves and routines. Demonstrating these moves to their peers helps develop social interaction skills.
