A school-leaver at 16, Kevin completed a youth training scheme and went on to have a series of jobs in construction, factories and motor racing. By the age of 28, feeling unfulfilled and suffering from depression, Kevin felt the urge to find a way of turning his love of sport – he’s an ex-professional motor racer - into a career.
He contacted a number of gyms, local to his home in Chatham, Kent, and asked their advice on how to train as a fitness instructor- “they all pointed me in the direction of YMCAfit”. After conversations with the YMCAfit team, he enrolled onto the Level 2 Gym Instructor course, at Central YMCA in London.
“With my depression, I was anxious at first as I was worried about how I would handle the challenges of the instructor training course. But the YMCAfit tutors were excellent. I felt reassured from the first phone call, right through by training and every step of the way.”
Kevin has gone on to qualify in many other disciplines, achieving his Personal Trainer Award, and completing YMCAfit qualifications in Advance Gym Instruction, Lifestyle and Fitness, Client Retention and Level 2 Aqua Training.
Fitness has become his life’s work, as well as his passion. He now works as a Gym Instructor, PT, teaches a variety of studio classes as well as Keiser and circuits. He’s recently added outdoor training to his portfolio and will be taking the Kids' Fitness Play and Games course this summer.
Admirably, on top of his job commitments Kevin maintains his personal active pursuits, exercising rigorously at least three times a week, playing golf and continuing his participation in motor racing. His wife, Sabrina, a full time nurse, also leads an active life, enjoying skating and yoga.
“My current goal is to teach kids’ fitness – to get as many kids active and more socially involved as I am able to! My long term aspiration would be to work for YMCAfit as a Tutor – not only for my own self-development but so that I can be in a position to help others experience the positive feelings and lifestyle changes that come with turning your passion into earning a living.”
